Notebook Binding Types Explained

Binding decides how a notebook opens, how long it lasts and how much it costs. Here is how the five main binding types compare.

Centre-stitched

The most economical option and the standard for school copies. Practical page counts are limited because folded sheets become bulky at the spine.

Spiral and wiro

Both let the notebook open fully flat or fold back on itself. Spiral is the popular choice for high-page-count student notebooks; double-loop wiro gives a neater, premium look. See spiral notebooks.

Perfect bound

A glued spine gives a clean, book-like finish at moderate cost and allows the spine to be printed. Common for soft-cover notebooks and tear-off notepads.

Case bound

The most durable binding, built for books used daily over a long time. The standard for registers, diaries and premium journals. See hardcover notebooks and registers.
